Harris County Department of Education’s Pugh Head Start Center was recently visited by state Rep. Ana Hernandez during the center’s bridging ceremony. Held to celebrate the transition of the pre-kindergarten students into neighboring Pugh Elementary, Rep. Hernandez attended to show support of the Head Start program.

Earlier this year, a group of Pugh Head Start parents sent a thank you letter to Rep. Hernandez’s office for advocating in support of Head Start. These parents were honored at the ceremony for their involvement in their children’s education and commitment to the program.

Last year’s budget cuts from the nationwide sequestration resulted in the closure of two HCDE Head Start centers and a reduction in staff. Center parents reached out to their elected officials to demonstrate the important work the Head Start program accomplishes and the impact it has on families and the community.

HCDE provides services to 14 Head Start centers located in northeast Harris County. Additional locations include Baytown, J.D. Walker, Pugh, Tidwell, Humble, Fifth Ward, Channelview, Compton, Coolwood, Dogan, Barrett Station, San Jacinto and Sheffield.

HCDE Head Start is currently enrolling for the 2014-15 school year. For information or locations, call (713) 672-9343 or visit www.hcde-texas.org/HeadStart.
