GALENA PARK – On September 21, 1935 the city was chartered. Originally named Clinton in 1833, it was changed in 1928 at the request of the post office, who had another city in Texas with that name.

The city marked its 80th birthday on Monday, with a noon ceremony at City Hall. Councilman Juan Flores acted as master of ceremonies, and city officials, students from Galena Park high school and the public joined in the celebration.

Other birthday events during the past week included a soccer tournament, a one mile walk-a-thon, historic displays and senior luncheons at Baggett Center and Galena Manor, and LyondellBasell’s Global Care Day.
