Pasadena Veterans Memorial Stadium (Newcomb Field) August 31, 2019 was the scene of a swarm of GP Yellow Jackets varsity football players, stinging the Pasadena Eagles, in a 49 to 6 win.

It was never a real contest. Coach Spiro Amarantos’s offensive and defensive teams performed so well it appeared they were playing a little league football team.

The Jackets scored seven touchdowns behind a strong offensive line led by Richard Martinez, Antonio Alanis and Ivan Martinez ,who made openings for running back Eli Quintero to make four TDs and 100 yards in the game. The line provided pass protection for sophomore quarterback A’marion Kelly to complete passes to Pat Hernandez, Caleb Aparicio and Fernando Martinez who scored on a TD pass.

The stingy Yellow Jackets defense overpowered the Eagles offense causing five turnovers, keeping them to less than 200 yards total offense.

Some of the Jackets defensive standouts were Derrick Sampson (interception), Austin Altwein (interception and fumble recovery), Brice Hernandez (fumble recovery & 6 tackles), Michael Gaitan (3 sacks), Landon Black (8 tackles), Dallas Blate (6 tackles), Ivan Hernandez (12 tackles) and Luis Sanchez (11 tackles).

When asked about the obvious mismatch Coach Spiro said, “We played real good and maybe they played bad, it’s hard to say.”

The 5A District Yellow Jackets beat the 6A Sam Rayburn Texans 19 to 7 at Pasadena Auxiliary Stadium in a 2 hour scrimmage game on Friday, August 23 rd.

The answer to just how good the 2 – 0 Yellow Jackets are will be their next game when they play a non-district home game against the 5A Dayton Broncos, Friday, September 6th at 7 PM.

Dayton has consistently had a good team although they lost their opener in a crushing defeat against the Friendswood Mustangs 42 to 0, so they’ll not want to lose back to back games.
