January 16, 2019 — Congresswoman Sylvia R. Garcia of the 29th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives was recently appointed on two of the House’s most influential committees.

To get appointed on the House Financial Services Committee and the House Judiciary Committee for the 116th Congress is a testament to her many accomplishments as a public servant.

“These assignments are vital to the Houston region, the State of Texas, and the nation. I’ve always fought for working families, and my appointments will allow me to use that experience to continue these efforts,” Garcia said. “It is an honor to serve on two impactful Committees.”

The Financial Services Committee has jurisdiction over issues pertaining to the economy, consumer financial services, housing, insurance, monetary policy, and banking. The Committee also has jurisdiction over the Department of the Treasury and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

“We will use this assignment to protect consumers from predatory lending practices and further the practical, pro-consumer priorities laid out by Chairwoman Waters,” Garcia said. “We must strengthen and expand the long-term stability of the National Flood Insurance Program and reform the Community Development Block Grant Program.”

The House Judiciary Committee oversees the administration of justice within the federal courts, administrative agencies, and Federal law enforcement entities, including immigration policy.

“The Judiciary Committee has crucial oversight on immigration issues that are important to our communities and the future of our nation,” said Garcia, “My experience as a legal aid lawyer, judge, and legislator has prepared me to advocate for immigrants, Dreamers, and the millions of people who pay American taxes and live under American laws, but do not enjoy the rights of citizenship. I look forward to pursuing these objectives under the leadership of Chairman Nadler.”

The 29th District encompasses Houston, Pasadena, Galena Park, Jacinto City, South Houston, and Aldine.
